How H!P members don’t watch their weight
2014 did feel like a year H!P struggled to find its footing with Tsunku being out of action. 2015 brings a lot of changes both inside and out. Things seems to be working out pretty well so far in my opinion.
What do you think the current H!P can improve upon?

Honestly this is going to be really unpopular but I truly feel like the problem lies solely with the music.
The only reason morning musume even became popular in the first place is because they had a GENUINE hit song with Love Machine. If they want that level of popularity again, someone over there needs to come up with another hit song. Most of their music these last couple of years has been so drab and uninspired with very weak melodies in particular. The only reason I follow hello pro now is because of the girls themselves.

It’s such a different market now though with so many idol groups around. The market and attention is divided up amongst so many players. Back during Love Machine there was no group that came close to challenging MM and MM clearly dominated TV. Even now which group has really released a real ‘hit song’. Even AKB with their popularity doesn’t have a song that can take the nation by storm and dominate all markets.

I’m not too familiar with AKB, but I would consider Beginner and Heavy Rotation to be bonafide hits. While I don’t particularly like Heavy Rotation, I can still admit that both these songs have simple, yet distinct melodies that are very catchy. That’s the key to pop music – the catchiness of the song. It’s the same thing with love machine: simple, yet elegant.
On the other hand what does hp have? Really weird, bland songs that just don’t sound good in my opinion. The only reason I’m still a hp wota is because no other group or agency has talent like a Sugaya Risako, Momochi or Suzuki Airi. For everything that I hate about upfront, I will concede that they seem to be really good at signing the best girls. And of course I still respect the HP brand more than any other. If a girl like Risako were in AKB I have no doubt she’d be the biggest thing in Japan right now.

Morning Musume didn’t dominate TV though. When Love Machine came out, Japan was obsessed with Hamasaki Ayumi, Suzuki Ami (MM’s official rival) and Utada Hikaru (who brought in TV ratings like crazy). It was after Love Machine that they stared to appear on more shows outside of ASAYAN and the usual music shows.
AKB’s first huge selling single was Heavy Rotation and much later KFC, but their first song to get #1 and sell huge amounts was RIVER because they tried something different. We saw breakthrough with One Two Three and Wagamama, but they’ve been beating a dead horse. They need something new.

Solos like Ayumi and Utada and Namie Amuro were always on a different tier than idol groups anyway. In spite of that I feel that Love Machine was still a nation-wide hit largely because there was no competition at the time. The song honestly is nothing special. Heavy Rotation was also able to be a hit because of teh power vacuum at the time. MM were stuck in their rut and the new wave of girl groups had not appeared yet. That’s why I think no matter what song MM (or any HP group for that matter) releases now there’s no way then can realistically aim to be a #1 nationwide hit again. There’s so much competition and so many options for viewers to turn to. That and AKB’s stranglehold on the market is insane. Even songs like 1 2 3 I wouldn’t really call a breakthrough. Yes, they gained some new attention but to most of the public it felt like the response was just “Oh wow MM isn’t dead yet. And now they’re dancing to EDM”.

> I kinda agree yet disagree. Wotas supposed to be watching the idols grow to be better. Yet beauty and skill are already part of the selection, probably the main reason idols gets to pass in groups is because, as Natsu-sensei mentioned in her book, is the attitude.
And I agree with what Wic said – they need another song that will be as big of a hit like Love Machine. Love Machine then don’t have that gimmick of “Limited Edition A/B/C and Regular Edition A/B”, etc but only just one CD, if I’m not mistaken. (I kinda remember Nacchi also saying that MoMusu were done for and their contract would be over if their next single won’t sell (which was Love Machine))

As a overseas’ fan (and hoping that you don’t get offended for whatever I say), I have to say that I feel pleased, not with the fact that Riho is being pushed back but the fact that the other members have chance to get more spotlight. I think it’s better this way.

I don’t think the distribution of potential aces is a fail. It might not be fair to the girls that aimed to be in the flagship group, but it’s better than having the other groups ignored. The new generation has potential across all groups, and it’s all up to the management to give them better exposure now.
However, I do agree about the new songs and choreography being just more of the same thing. H!P seems to love to do this. They rarely try anything new, and when they finally do take a new direction, they stick to the formula for ages, thinking it’s going to work forever. The only group that seems to keep trying new things is C-ute.
Things have improved a bit this year though, with Country girls’ first new single, and Taiki Bansei, and Yuugure wa Ameagari. But even in these songs, they’ve recycled some stuff, like some choreography and MV concept.

I totally agree with #16, even tough it’s truth that H!P did this business formula before AKB, we have to accept that this formula is AKB’s speciality, because I think AKB really knows how to please the wotas, It gives want most of them want. So there’s no way MM can beat AKb by following the same formula. It’s sad but true, and I think that’s why they’re giving MM a new image, I hope it to be more public-friendly.

You don’t even have to look at Kpop. Compare HP PVs with AKB, Perfume, E-girls, or even Supergirls and Fairies. The production quality is drastically lower, and I can’t imagine it would cost that much more to improve it. UFP is just cheap as hell IMO.

They’re not just cheap as hell, they’re also totally unimaginative. The lack of creativity in their MVs is appalling. You don’t even need high production quality to make good, memorable music videos. UpUpGirls has much better, more memorable music videos on a much lower budget.
